Monday, November 26, 2012:
IBM (NYSE: IBM) and PSG College of Technology today announced a new on-campus Center of Excellence that provides training programs on IBM Power Systems and the IBM AIX Operating System to help prepare students for jobs in the technology sector.
|
|
AIX training enables students to hone their skills on Virtualization, Security and Cloud. Through this initiative, students will move from 'theory based' training to a 'hands on' practical knowledge about the subject. The training would also enable them to get a comprehensive understanding of server infrastructure and also make them more industry ready when they start their careers.
IBM commenced its AIX journey over a decade ago and has now emerged as the industry leader. Today, for every two UNIX infrastructure in the market, one runs on the AIX operating system. IBM has a strong roadmap for its Unix-based architecture as well as a growing list of clientele in India. IBM dominated the market with a 49.4% market share for its non-x86 servers (Unix-based servers) in the first half of this year (Jan-June 2012) in terms of unit shipments, as per latest IDC estimates.
“India’s transition to a knowledge-based economy requires our students to rapidly adopt new IT skills in order to be employable when they graduate,” said R. Rudramoorthy- Principal, PSG College of Technology. “By working with a market leader like IBM, we are able to more quickly keep pace with technology developments and differentiate our academic programs from other institutions.”
“IBM recognizes the important role of technology and innovation in the education sector and has been working closely with universities around the world to improve and evolve IT skills among students,” said Venu Juvvala, Branch Manager – Chennai, IBM India/South Asia. “We are committed to eliminating barriers to students’ access to well paying jobs after graduation and are very pleased to partner with PSG College of Technology on this important initiative.”
This is the first time PSG will offer specialized training on IBM server technologies on campus. Certificates will be awarded to students who complete the programme and the top 10 percent of students will also receive Prometric Certification.
As organizations today are increasingly looking at hiring skilled professionals, IBM is investing in this initiative to ensure there is more practical experience on Enterprise Class Unix Operating System for students graduating. This significantly helps improve their chances of employability in the market.
As part of IBM’s Systems Centre of Excellence programme for colleges, there are courses on Certificate in Mainframe fundamentals and application, Certification in Linux fundamentals and Certification in AS400 fundamentals. With the latest emerging technologies like Cloud, Virtualization, Remote Infrastructure Management gaining adoption both locally and globally, these initiatives are expected to help students get a complete understanding of server technologies which is one of the key pillars of the IT Infrastructure of any organization.
Companies around the world rely on IBM Power Systems and the AIX Operating System to run their business critical applications, quickly and securely. With more organizations deploying IBM Power Systems, there has been an increase in career opportunities available for graduates to help companies run their data centers or work with IBM Business Partners to provide compatible software and services.
IBM has a strong presence in Coimbatore and has been closely working with universities to improve and evolve IT skills. The tie-up with PSG College is a commitment to developing a next generation of business and technology skills which are in line with business requirements.
