Monday, February 06, 2012 Elsevier, a world leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, and the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), today announce the recipients of the 6th Annual NASI ScopusT Young Scientist Awards. The awards were presented at a gala ceremony yesterday evening at The Leela Palace Hotel in New Delhi, in the presence of the Honourable Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Science and Technology.

Recognizing India's increasing contribution to world science, Elsevier instituted the Scopus Young Scientist Awards in 2006 to honor the talent, knowledge and expertise of India's early career researchers. In 2009, Elsevier partnered with NASI, institutionalizing the Awards within the Indian scientific community.

Winners were selected from a pool of more than 250 applications from research institutes and universities throughout India based on both quantitative and qualitative measures. Elsevier provided quantitative analysis using data from SciVerse Scopus, the world's largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources, while subject experts from across India assisted in looking at qualitative aspects of the research work of the candidate. Awards were presented in eight disciplines. The winners are:

Agriculture: Dr. Satish Bhadravati Shivachandra, Senior Scientist, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Mukteshwar, Clinical Bacteriology Laboratory, Division of Virology

Biological Science: Dr. Sanjib Senapati, Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Department of Biotechnology

Chemistry: Dr. Partha Sarathi Mukherjee, Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Inorganic & Physical Chemistry Department

Earth, Oceanographic & Environmental Science: Dr. Sagnik Dey, Assistant Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Centre for Atmospheric Science

Engineering: Dr. Sundergopal Sridhar, Senior Scientist, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Membrane Separation Group, Chemical Engineering Division

Mathematics: Dr. Prahlad Harsha, Reader, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, School of Technology & Computer Science

Medicine: Dr. Ritesh Agarwal, Associate Professor, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Department of Pulmonary Medicine

Physics: Dr. Satyajit Banerjee, Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Department of Physics

The jury looked at: the quality and number of publications, fellowships of academies, awards and grants received, relevance of the scientific work and its outcome, and the overall presentation and discussion at the in person meeting. Special consideration was also given to novel ideas and innovations which have potential for future research and commercial application

"The philosophy of the Scopus Awards program is celebrating science". remarked Dr. T. Ramasami "I must congratulate Elsevier for introducing the award and also NASI for partnering with them in promoting scientific excellence."

"It is indeed a pleasure for our Academy to be associated with Elsevier to promote excellence and nurture creativity in science," added Prof. Arun Kumar Sharma, President, NASI. "I am confident that the Scopus Young Scientist Award program will continue to play its commendable role in years to come."

"This is an exciting time for Indian researchers," adds Youngsuk Chi, Chairman of the Elsevier Management Committee. "India is quickly adapting its role as a world superpower in research, and has built up an incredible pool of talented scientist at world-class institutions that engage in cutting-edge research. By organising Scopus Awards in more than 15 countries, Elsevier recognizes the most significant scientific research and honors the researchers who work tirelessly to advance science."

Researchers interested in submitting applications for next year's NASI Scopus Young Scientist Awards are encouraged to register at http://southasia.elsevier.com/SYSA2012 to receive further information and updates. As part of its efforts to support the global research community, Elsevier honours dozens of early career researchers each year in various disciplines and regions around the world through Scopus award programs.
