Wednesday, February 01, 2012 With the growing need for developing alternative methods through specialised education to create a sustainable living, TERI University graduates today at their convocation ceremony, dedicated themselves to the importance of environmental protection and the need to maintain equity, ecological security, and the wealth of global natural resources.

TERI University held its Fourth Convocation ceremony today in which 9 students were conferred doctoral degrees and 157 students were awarded master's degrees. HE Col. James Alix Michel, President of the Republic of Seychelles, was the Chief Guest at the occasion alongwith Dr RK Pachauri, Chancellor, TERI University and Director-General, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

Honorary doctorates were awarded to HE James Alix Michel, President, Republic of Seychelles, Bharrat Jagdeo, Former President, Republic of Guyana, Erik Solheim, Minister of Environment and Minister of Development Cooperation, Kingdom of Norway, Dr Elinor Ostrom, Nobel laureate and Naina Lal Kidwai, Group General Manager and Country Head of the HSBC Group in India.

Speaking at the convocation ceremony, Dr. RK Pachauri, Chancellor TERI University and Director-General TERI said, "TERI University has made a rapid beginning in re-orienting higher education. We need to make a society which has a global vision, and this convocation programme is reflective of the vision. We need to ensure that students are embedded with a global vision, aspiration and inspiration. Higher education must be research based and here in the University, we ensure that students are driven to conduct research. We also welcome partnerships from across the globe and our expansion plans are underway."

Encouraging students to take up the cause of sustainability Dr Elinor Ostrom said, "Today we are faced with various environmental challenges. The environment has changed dramatically over the past few decades and the younger generation can make a substantial difference in preserving the global commons. It is upto the younger generation to adopt new methods and diagonistic approach in countering climate change and protect the commons." She further added, "I am humbled by the honour conferred upon me today."

Accepting his degree, HE James Alix Michel, President, Republic of Seychelles, said, "Today's occasion is of special significance and pride and is symbolic of our collaboration with India. Science will help us understand the dynamics of global commons. We at Seychelles appreciate the efforts taken by TERI and TERI University for their works and achievements. TERI University is an institution of higher learning and has shown exemplary leadership skills in being the change and spreading awareness about sustainable development."

TERI University's roots can be traced back to 1998, when the TERI School of Advanced Studies was established. The School was subsequently renamed TERI University in October 2006. TERI University was conceived to cater to the need of disseminating the vast reservoir of knowledge created by TERI, a not-for-profit, independent research institute recognised globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development.

The genesis of TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy, and outreach activities of TERI. The relationship with TERI has propelled and influenced the evolution of the University's academic units.

This vision was further strengthened in 1999, when the University was granted "Deemed to be University" status by the University Grants Commission and notified by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education and Government of India.

Since its inception, the University has offered not just world-class education, but also an environment that enables its students to develop fresh perspectives on their subjects of study. This includes regular interactions with researchers, scientists and academicians. The University's first convocation was held on 16 October 2006, where 8 doctoral and 36 master's degrees were awarded.

An exciting phase in the growth of the TERI University commenced few years ago, when it moved to this new campus-- built on a 2 acre plot that provides a setting which enhances learning and showcases the concept of modern green buildings. The campus is aesthetically designed with several features of passive solar design, energy-efficiency and water and waste management systems.

The University encourages the exchange of ideas, cultural understanding, and wide range of knowledge that would result from an international exposure. The University firmly believes that ample opportunity should be provided to students to unwind and relax. From participating in presentations to displaying their creative talent in the University's annual festivals, students have many ways in which to take a break from classroom rigour.
